What Foods Are Best For a Diabetic Dog?

July 23rd, 2009 by admin

best commercial dog food for cushings diseaseIf you have ever wondered "What do I feed a diabetic dog?" this article will cover the topics you are looking for. What to feed a diabetic dog is a very important point to learn on so that your dog will have a happy and enjoyable life.

The food to feed a diabetic dog relates to the original problem of what caused the diabetes in the first place. The problem with diabetes is one of not being able to use the energy, called sugar or glucose that enters the bloodstream. This is caused by lack or total loss of insulin production by your dog’s pancreas. Overeating combined with a lethargic lifestyle causes an obese dog and then contributes to the cause of diabetes in dogs.

What to feed a diabetic dog in this case is just as important as making sure they start becoming more active. Do not let the dog lay around after a meal. It is also a good idea to give the dog two or three smaller meals instead of only one or two larger meals.

The food to feed a diabetic dog should be one of significantly low sugar content. The juicy or moist packages of dog food should be closely examined for high sugar content if you can. These are usually a prime source of too much sugar for your dog. The dry dog foods are better than the packaged moist ones for a diabetic dog.

The diet of a dog that you want to keep lean, healthy and active is one that you would normally use to prevent diabetes. This means that high-protein, slow-digesting foods are good for your dog, as they will not "shock" the dog’s body with a high dose of sugar all at one time. The food to feed a diabetic dog will be those that have a "slow burn" metabolically speaking.

A food not to feed to a diabetic dog is table scraps. If you do feed them from your own table, it is wise to avoid the spicy foods. A dog is not a person. Although feeding your dog "people food" may make you feel like you are including it as one of the family, the truth is that the fatty foods we eat can cause health problems for the dog. Commercial businesses have spent a lot of money creating a diet for your dog that is tailored to what it needs. Take advantage of their experience and your diabetic dog will have an easier life.

What to feed a diabetic dog should be seen in the light of the statistics. In the USA, as much as fifty percent of dogs are obese. This is a terrible statistic and can be improved easily by a simple lifestyle change for the dog. Keep in mind that as you would go ahead and eat less and exercise more if you had a weight problem, your dog is not going to be any different.

Some dog food companies make a special blend just for diabetic dogs. They have a high amount of dietary fiber, are low fat content and have none of what is called "simple sugars". Your diabetic dog’s diet can be improved with these types of dry dog foods.

Bad Dog Food Brands

July 23rd, 2009 by admin

[Editor's Note: Believe it or not, the ingredients from one dog food brand to another can very greatly. Just like people, a dog's health is directly linked to the food they eat. To ensure the health of your dog, it's best to stick to some natural organic premium dog food brands. Check out our 10 top dog food brands.]

best dry dog food brandsYour dog is a part of your family and you want your pet to live a long and very healthy life. Your dog is always there for you, ready to play, snuggle, always loyal. Your pet relies on you, as their owner, to take care of them, give them a warm place to sleep, water to drink and healthy dog food to eat. They are not able to choose what is best for them.

Are you looking to buy the generic brand to save a few dollars? Are all dog foods the same? The answer is no, they’re not. There are so many ingredients put into dog food that you can’t even pronounce. Saving a few dollars now could cost you later at the vet’s office when your baby starts to have some health issues. Surprisingly some premium pet foods are comparable in price because you actually feed less as they are more nutrient dense than their cheap counterparts. So many dog foods have mainly fillers that they label as protein. They are things such as soybean meal, corn meal, corn gluten meal, and maize wheat. These may be sources of protein, but they are not enough for your dog’s health. They need meat.

There are also food colorings in dog food, and oddly enough, the dogs don’t care what color the food is, all the marketing is for us, the pet owner. Food dyes can be made from chemicals. There have been many dog trainers that correlate food dye with hyperactive dogs, as it has been associated with hyperactive children. Chemical preservatives like BHA and BHT should not be on the ingredient list and should be avoided.

Another form the pet food manufacturers use is the by-product protein. These include necks, feet, intestines, lungs, ligaments, head and undeveloped eggs. Some pet foods contain no active cultures and other digestive aids. This is why some dogs have bloating, gas and bowel issues. Without this very important ingredient you pet might not be absorbing what nutrition is in the food! In the long run this can be very unhealthy.

The first ingredient should be a meat as it the most natural protein source for dogs. As do humans, animals benefit from fruits and vegetables and proper carbohydrate consumption. The free radicals that affect are health; affect your pet’s health as well. That is why to neutralize them antioxidants are so important to have in their diet. You can visit healthy dog food for more information.

Nutrition or lack of can affect your dog’s health which can include their coat, teeth, ears, nails, breath, energy and brain. Unfortunately it can also affect how long they live and the quality of life they live. All too many times I have seen dogs that have eaten not so healthy food. At first nothing seems wrong but just as humans if you keep eating "junk food" it will eventually show some sign of distress like high cholesterol, lack of energy, hair dry and falling out, bad teeth, moodiness, obesity and more.

Taste of the Wild Dog Food

July 22nd, 2009 by admin

taste of the wildIf you go to any supermarket, you will notice an aisle full of dry dog food. While the low prices and cute puppy commercials on television advertising these brands certainly seem attractive, all it takes is a quick look at the actual ingredients to make any dog lover run for the exit.

The truth is that many commercial brand dry dog foods contain grains, by products, and other nasty additives that are downright unhealthy for your dog. It’s no surprise that many dog owners are instead turning to more natural and organic premium dog foods to ensure their dog’s optimum health.

One such brand of premium dog food to come along is Taste of the Wild.

Manufactured in the United States, Taste of the Wild dog food takes a unique approach to dog nutrition – by mimicking a balanced diet they would receive if they were out in the wild. According to the company, modern science has proven that the genetic makeup of dogs still share the same DNA of wolves. By formulating their dog foods to more closely match a wolf’s diet, chances are that they will not only love the taste, but also be healthier for it.

Taste of the Wild dog food is made with real roasted meats and is supplemented with fruits and vegetables. Because grains can actually cause health problems in canines, Taste of the Wild is completely grain-free to ensure high digestibility and maximum nutrition. Taste of the Wild also eschews all by-products, so you can be sure that your dog is getting the best.

Currently, there are three Taste of the Wild dry dog food formulas:

High Prairie Canine Formula

Suitable for all life stages, High Prairie uses ingredients such as sweet potatoes and peas for high digestibility. This grain-free formula is made with real roasted meats such as bison and venison for great taste, and includes fruits and vegetables for natural antioxidants for a healthy immune system and optimum health.

Pacific Stream Canine Formula

Comprised mainly of fish protein, Pacific Stream uses premium ingredients such as fresh and smoked salmon. Rich in omega fatty acids, these ingredients offer highly digestible protein to help your dog maintain good health. To keep things balanced, sweet potatoes, fruits and vegetables give your dog the vitamins and minerals needed to stay healthy.

Wetlands Canine Formula

If your dog is picky about food, the Wetlands Canine Formula may be the answer. Made with roasted and smoked fowl such as quail, duck and turkey, this hearty tastes great and offers very digestible quality protein for your active dog.

Dog Food Ratings – Top 10 Best Dog Foods

top recommended dog food

Selecting the best dog food for our treasured pets can be quite a challenge for the dog owners. Here are some dog food ratings, and a list of the top 10 dog foods. This 10 best dog food list is sure to help you in keeping your pet happy and healthy for long.

Well, I will make no bones about it, but I can relate to the dilemma faced by the dog owners when choosing the best dog food for their furry pets. With the huge variety of pet food available in the market, how do you know if the food that you picked up for your dog, will actually keep it happy and healthy?

To top it off, it turns out that our adorable pets are actually quite choosy eaters, with some dog foods receiving a cold shoulder treatment. This outright refusal can be quite a burden on your pockets as well. It is therefore important that dog owners pick the right food from the market.

Obviously, the cheap food available off the shelf seems like a good idea, but it is more vital that the dog receives food of a very high quality. This best quality dog food should also have all the essential vitamins and minerals, for the longevity and health of the dog. So, dumping some chow into their food bowl does not constitute a good meal for the dogs. It is imperative that the dog receives a balanced diet, which is individually determined based on their age, size, and breed. Interestingly, most dog foods found in grocery stores tend to be economy dog foods, which end up costing more than buying a premium or super premium dog food. This is because this food tends to be lower in nutrients than premium varieties, with more food being used to get the same nutritional benefit of higher priced premium dog foods.

There are a host of dog food products available commercially, like healthy dog food, organic dog food, canned dog food and natural dog food. The top dog foods may not be suitable to all dogs, as what works for one may not work for another. A great idea is to mix and match the foods to provide a more holistic dog food diet . Here is a look at some commercially available ‘top 10 best dog foods’, ranked in no particular order.

Dog Food Ratings: 10 Best Dog Food

Containing meat, fish and vegetables, this product ensures that all dietary needs of your dog are met. It is rich in vitamins, chelated minerals, omega three and omega six fatty acids. Canidae: Offering a diet of complete amino acids, containing four major proteins and whole ingredients, Canidae is a canned dog food. Although they have more grains than other premium dog foods, it is more than compensated by the human grade meat and the absence of cheap fillers. Priced on the higher side, this canned food can be fed as a sole food or can even mixed with other dry dog food.

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul: This is a dry dog food, which though less expensive than the other supermarket brands, contains top quality ingredients like chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole-grain brown rice and whole-grain white rice.

Wellness Dog Food: The popular product, Wellness Super5Mix, contains three main proteins, right at the top of the ingredient list. They use filtered water in the production of this food and probiotics are also added afterwards. With a promise that all lamb is hormone free, this dog food should really be higher up on the list.

Wysong Maintenance

California Natural Dog Food: This is a hypoallergenic dog food, beneficial for dogs with skin allergies and hyper food sensitivities. Priced at $0.92 per pound, this product contains only one protein, one fat and one carbohydrate source, and is free of gluten, wheat, corn and soy.

What is the Best Puppy Food on the Market?

July 21st, 2009 by admin

best puppy food for boxersIf you’ve just brought home a new puppy, you probably can’t contain your excitement.  However, before marching off to the supermarket to buy a big bag of commercial dog food, you should explore your options.  The sad truth is that many commercial dog foods are laden with artificial ingredients and toxins that can be harmful to your puppy’s health.

The best puppy dog food is raw, unprocessed, home cooked, or premium organic food.  Commercial dog food, particularly dry food you can find in the supermarket, lacks nutrients and is made of cheap ingredients that fill your dog up with empty calories.

The best puppy dog food should be supplemented with essential nutrients and enzymes that support proper digestion and elimination as well as strengthen the immune system.  Puppies have problems with diarrhea either due to early weaning or a nervous reaction to their new surroundings.  You can give your puppy a probiotic to cure his diarrhea.

Puppy Food Solutions

A raw foods diet consists of giving your puppy raw or lightly cooked pieces of meat.  Some raw food proponents also give their dog fruits and vegetables because they claim that in the wild, dogs eat fruits and vegetables in addition to meat.

Some pet owners swear up and down that raw food is the best puppy dog food but it’s up to each owner to decide.  Raw food is protein-packed and full of enzymes and nutrients in an unaltered state.  If you buy organic meat it is very healthy but it can also be expensive.  You also have to take into consideration that meat can be contaminated with bacteria and cause food-borne illnesses.

To decide whether a raw foods diet is the best puppy dog food for your pup, visit a breeder that feeds his dogs the raw food diet.  See for yourself how healthy the dogs look by judging whether the raw foods diet is beneficial to the dog’s coat, overall appearance, and teeth and gums.

You can also prepare your puppy’s meals from scratch.  By doing so you will know exactly what goes into the food.  The best dog food recipe for home cooked dog food is a big meaty stew.  However, making home cooked dog food can be very time consuming and it takes an organized person to be able to do the meal planning that it requires.

A third alternative is to buy a premium organic dog food brand, such as Wellness or Wysong. For many, this is the optimal solution since cooking your own dog food from scratch isn’t always possible with most people’s schedules the way they are. These dog foods are also very healthy and go through stringent screening processes for quality and nutritional value.

Make no mistake about it.  The best puppy dog food is all natural.  It’s up to you if you want to cook your puppy’s food or serve him raw meat and bones but you should remember that many commercial dog foods contain artificial ingredients and lacks the nutrients necessary for your puppy to grow into a healthy, happy dog.

Puppy Food – Wet Or Dry, Does it Really Make A Difference?

And if all else fails, a hungry dog will eat; just make sure that your dog is healthy enough for such a drastic measure. It is best to consult with your veterinarian before attempting to switch food.

Healthy Dog Food Recipes

July 21st, 2009 by admin

healthy puppy foodWhether you’re looking for a vegetarian dog food recipe or a purely meat-based one, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of a healthy dog food diet.  A healthy dog food recipe should consist of mostly protein with the ten amino acids and some carbohydrates.  You should also add more vitamins and minerals to the recipe with fruits and vegetables.

You can give your dog most vegetables and fruits but you should avoid onions, avocadoes, and mushrooms because they can cause health problems.  You can make a healthy dog food recipe based off of a protein source like eggs, fish, lamb, beef, pork, chicken, pheasant, etc.  Add a carbohydrate like oats, barley, wheat germ, or quinoa to the meat.

A healthy dog food recipe should be served at room temperature.  Don’t serve your dog food that is hot from the stove or cold from sitting in the refrigerator.  Adult dogs only need one meal a day.

Examples of Healthy Dog Food Recipes

It might seem expensive to feed your dog home cooked food.  It is certainly time-consuming but it doesn’t have to be expensive.  You don’t have to give your dog prime cuts of meat.  Chicken parts like veal, liver, and neck for example are very palatable for your dog and cheaper for you.

A healthy dog food recipe can consist of sautéed liver or different animal parts made into a stew with some vegetables and wheat germ added.  You can also blend liver and mix it with honey, dried milk, and wheat germ and bake it in the oven to make liver cookies for your dog.

Instead of following a particular healthy dog food recipe, you can also just make a little more of the food you feed yourself and family to give to your dog.  Human food with meat, vegetables, and grains is perfect for a dog.  It contains the antioxidants that commercial dog food lacks and that your dog needs in order to maintain good health.

Wash all of the produce well that you feed your dog.  You can cook the meats or you can feed them to your dog raw.  Some pet owners swear up and down that a raw meat diet is the most natural diet for dogs.  Make sure to seek variety when preparing food for your dog so your dog gets a wide array of nutrients from his food.  Give your dog organic foods when possible and make sure he gets plenty of fresh, filtered water to drink.

Your goal?  Take this information as a guide and use it to help you come up with healthy dog food recipes for your dear pet.  You can help your dog live a healthier, happier life by giving him home cooked food.  Remember to be creative and use a variety of ingredients in your dog’s food so he gets plenty of nutrients.

Healthy Dog Food Recipes

Some dog owners thoroughly enjoy making their dogs food. Using a dog health food recipe is a way for the dog owner to enjoy preparing their dogs food and providing a healthy meal for their dog.

Healthy Dog Food Recipes

While most dog owners rely on the convenience of manufactured dog food, many dog owners enjoy making their dogs food. A dog health food recipe can come in handy if the dog has a health problem like obesity or diabetes.

A few years back, there was widepsread pet food recalls across the U.S. This incident led to a spike in people wanting to learn how to better protect thier pets by finding dog food recipes and cookbooks.

compare natural dog food brands[Editor's Note: Only Natural Pet Store tests all of the dog foods they offer for optimal nutrition. You can order now and get 5% off your first order by entering the promo code CJ15 at checkout!]

Feeding your dog the right dog food is very important to ensuring your pet’s health. Having a dog food nutrition comparison is handy because it allows you to see just what you’re buying and what you’re dog is getting when you lug that pack of dog food home. Many health problems and even behavioral problems can be solved with a simple switch to a better quality food. It might seem too good to be true but in many cases improving your dog’s diet can result in a better behaved and happier dog.

Reading The Label

Making a dog food nutrition comparison on your own is pretty easy; it involves reading the label of dog food available in your supermarket. However it can be a little difficult to start your dry and canned dog food comparison. The labels can sometimes be confusing and if you don’t know what you’re looking for you can easily pick up a dog food that is no good for your dog.

The first three ingredients are very important when making a dog food nutrition comparison. The first three ingredients indicate what the dog food is principally composed of. Ideally the first three ingredients should be a named meat, and some form of non grain starch. Rice, tapioca, ground grain sorghum, and potatoes are all good sources of carbohydrates. Watch out for corn meal, soy, and wheat.

Another thing to watch out for when making a dog food nutrition comparison is the chemicals and preservatives in the food. Many chemicals are harmful and sometimes preservatives either banned or strictly controlled in human food is found in pet food.

A dog food nutrition comparison shows that good quality dog food should not contain any dyes. Mixed Tocopherols are an accepted natural preservative, anything else is harmful. Ground meal is an indication of poor protein sources and this is usually found in cheaper dog foods.

Now that you know what should be avoided in a dog food nutrition comparison you should know what to look out for. Antioxidants are great for keeping your dog healthy, grape seed extract is a good source of antioxidants. Probiotics can help a dog’s digestive and immune system.

Vegetables are also important for a dog’s well being, as well as minerals. Read the labels carefully when making a dog food nutrition comparison and you will soon see that some brands are much better than others. Avoid cheap brands that contain soy, wheat, and animal by products.

Nutrition For Our Older Dogs

With our older dog, it is obviously very important to supply him/or her with the best and healthiest possible nutrition available.

Homemade Dog Food Elevated Kidney

July 20th, 2009 by admin

homemade diabetic dog foodIt is important to know what goes into your dog’s mouth, and the best way to ensure this is to make the food at home. Lately, there have been many pet food recalls, and many pet owners are resorting to homemade dog food to make sure their pets get a healthy diet.

Canines have some specific nutrient requirements, and many veterinarians believe that homemade diet is best for your dog. It is however important that if your dog has been on the commercial food for a while, change is done slowly, so that digestive upsets can be avoided. It is a good idea to consult the veterinarian who will be able to guide you regarding nutritional needs of your pet.

Make sure that you don’t feed bones to your dog, especially the cooked bones as fragments can easily become lodged in their digestive tract. Canines who live in the wild consume hide and hair as well, which can pad the fragments of bones and aid their passage through the digestive tract. Other foods that are best avoided for canines are avocados, chocolates, macadamia nuts, onions, raisins, garlic and grapes.
